 When you want to apply for a work permit, depending on the nation or region from which you're applying, there might be conditions set by the your visa office.

Overall, there are 2 types of work permits.

Employer-specific work permit

An employer-specific work permit allows you to work for a specific employer in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit.

Open work permit

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for one that

Besides, some work permits require a job offer from an employer, some require job offer and LMIA and some are exempt from both.

LMIA exempt requiring a job offer

International Mobility Program (IMP)

The International Mobility Program lets you (the employer) hire a temporary worker without a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

These LMIA exemptions are based on the following conditions:

  • broader Canadian economic, cultural, or other competitive advantages; and,
  • advantages shared by Canadians and permanent residents;

This could take one of the following forms:

  • Reciprocal youth exchange agreements, such as the International Experience Canada (IEC) program.
  • Other international agreements with specific countries, such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and the Canada–European Union Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (CETA).
  • Permitting companies with a branch, subsidiary, or affiliate in Canada to transfer workers under the Intra-Company Transfer program.
  • Situations that bring ‘significant social or cultural benefit to Canada

Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

If you have studied in Canada in a DLI institution you can apply for a PGWP which is an open work permit and does not require a job offer.

Open work permit for the accompanying spouse of a student

If your spouse is studying in Canada, you can apply for an open work permit. You can apply for a work permit at the same time as your spouse applies for a study permit and study permit for dependent children.

PNPs

Some PNP (Provincial Nomination Programs) require a job offer. Among these, some are LMIA exempt, and some require proven attempts by the employer to recruit from inside Canada.

International Experience Canada (IEC)

IEC work permit is based on Canada’s arrangements with 36 countries and works in 3 categories

To support their travels, participants are given an open work permit that allows them to work anywhere in the host country.

🔺International Co-op (Internship) participants get with an employer-specific work permit, allowing them to gain targeted experience in their field of study.

🔺 Young Professionals
Participants receive an employer-specific work permit in order to gain targeted, professional work experience in their field of study or career path.


For participants of 18 to 35 years old, depending on their country.
